quickest way of determining whether or not an ICF-SW100 has the new
version hinge is to visually inspect the hinge itself when the receiver
is open. An older version hinge is SOLID along its entire length. The
new version hinge has a 9/16" shuttered opening notched into it. In
the photo for this auction, you'll see the notch starting above
the middle of the 2 button and ending on the right side of the 3
button. That notch prevents the hinge from crimping the cable ribbon. If the notch is not shuttered, leaving the copper cable exposed to the outside world, there's a very good chance (1) the cable will be damaged again and (2) dust and bits will find their way into the vulnerable circuit board compartment. Post-1997 Series There
are two versions of the ICF-SW100, the pre-1997 series and the
post-1997 series. The post-1997 series is reputed to have several
advantages over the pre-1997: • More economical use of batteries. • A buffer amplifier, which improves the receiver's performance, including sensitivity, when used with active external antenna (AN-100). • An improved synchronous detection chip, much better at locking and holding weaker signals with less distortion. • A new speaker driver which allows user to turn the speaker up much higher without producing unpleasant distortion. Because Sony has sold a new hinge replacement kit for years, an ICF-SW100 receiver with new hinge is possibly but not necessarily a post-1997 unit. In most cases, a serial number above 79043 confirms the receiver is post 1997. That said, there are also some post-1997 series/new version hinge ICF-SW100 receivers with out of sequence 50000-54900 serial numbers. In the latter case, the best way to confirm the series is to ask the seller. Backup Power System This SW100 is unusual in having a fully functional backup power system—Sony refers to this system as the Built-in Computer Backup (Sony ICF-SW100S Operating Instructions, p.11). When
the batteries are switched out and during brief AC adapter power
outages, the backup system maintains for several minutes the current time, alarm timer settings, and current active frequency.
A non-flashing "empty battery" icon (upper right-hand corner of
display--see second photo) indicates the receiver is drawing power from its backup power system. (Note: the Built-in Computer Backups of Sony's early SW100s-- serial numbers under 15000--do not display an icon.) With this system, when the radio briefly loses power, you don't have to reset the time, frequency, or the
timers of the much harder to reset alarms (each takes several minutes to reset and check).
