SIMPLE MACHINES
from the 'Hands On Minds On Science series - Teacher Created Materials Inc.
Contents include: scientific method, science process skills and organising the work.
What are machines and what do they do? Hands on activities....Wind machines, turbines, a simple motor, spool races, clinging friction, ball bearings and gears.
Then... What do six simple machines do? more hands on activcities - inclined planes, the wedge, round and round, levers that balance, pulleys, wheel and axle and compound machines.
Then.. How do machines 'think' and communicate? an early computer, flow diagrams, how fast is a computer?, communicatons, morse code, satellite communication.
Finally some assessment activities, a glossary and a bibliography.
It sounds a bit stuffy but it isn't. The presentation is clear, the photocopiable worksheets are good, diagrams well done and the content is age appropriate. Each activity is set out as a question followed by a 'scene setting' the materials you need, procedure, extension work and a conclusion.
