My name is Roman Szablowski. I paint, I draw, I invent things. I build cars, bikes, robots and time machines (I'm joking about the time machines!).
About my paintings: my medium of choice for this range of art is watercolour. I paint in Oil, Acrylic and Pastel also, but here I will explain my Watercolour technique.

First off, I will say that Tone is King. The shape of an object, be it a face or an axe, is not as important as correct tone. By tone, I mean lightness or darkness, not colour. I have always been able to correctly draw an object's shape or structure, but if I had to choose a skill to desert me, it would be that skill. I would always want to capture the correct tones in a subject. This skill is PARAMOUNT. If you are able to show the correct tones and place them next to one another, in harmony, then your painting will SING with reality. It may not look exactly like Elvis or Gandalf but it will look lovely and REAL. Colour, structure and detail follow next in importance.
So, I start with a 2H pencil and lightly draw my subject. When I am happy with that I begin to apply a series of very pale watery washes. Sometimes painting into wet and sometimes into dry, depending on weather I need a hard or a soft edge. Gradually I build up my map of tones and colours with anywhere up to about thirty progressively darker washes. Now I use my secret weapon. The watercolour pencil. With this tool I enter into the painting and really make it come alive. It can be used dry or wet. Before the pencil touches the painting I must be happy with its TONE. I test it on a scrap first. Sometimes I dive in with a strong tone and sometimes, with a softer tone, I swim gently. Lastly, I re-sharpen a few pencils and add some detail, like wispy hairs, with a free and easy hand.
I hope this is useful in understanding my approach.
