Acclaimed for its exceptional intonation, ease in
response, and outstanding projection, the Schilke Bb trumpet has set a standard
for playability and build quality since it was introduced in the 1950's. The reverse
main tuning slide with full radius bend, leadpipe design and bore variation
help create a responsive, open feel with an overall evenness throughout the
range of the instrument. This B3 plays beautifully with a focused, resonate centre to the sound. Perfect for all styles of music from classical to jazz.
The Schilke website says;
Model B3 Bb Trumpet
Bore: L -.463" (11.75 mm)
Bell: M – 5" (127.00 mm) Yellow Brass Bell with #3
taper
"This versatile large bore model plays with added brilliance,
immediate response, balance in colour and feel throughout the range from top to
bottom. The B3 is ideal for the player looking for a “big horn feel” yet with more
resistance than our X3 model".
I found that although this is a large-bored instrument this trumpet doesn't take as much air to fill as you might expect. A lot less than the X3 which I have played also. This is no doubt due to the medium sized bell which adds resistance to the blow of the horn and gives a more compact centre to the sound. The B3 is played by the famous orchestral trumpeter Adolph "Bud" Herseth, former Principal Trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
The trumpet has a four digit serial number which means it
was produced at the original Schilke factory under the supervision of Renold O.
Schilke himself.
The trumpet has been
looked after and is in very good condition. The valves are fast and smooth and all the slides all operate
perfectly. The silver plate is fully intact. There are no dents and just some very tiny dings that were far too small to show up on my digital camera.
John Packer Ltd, a
competitive Schilke dealer here in the UK sells this trumpet new for £2450.
