Say Anything: Casper Adams (guitar); Kevin Seaton (bass guitar); Coby Linder (drums); Max Bemis. Arranger: Stephen Trask. Originally released in 2004, SAY ANYTHING IS A REAL BOY stands as the Los Angeles-based emo band's official debut. With the group temporarily sidelined by frontman Max Bemis's mental instability, Say Anything finally got back on track with the '06 reissue of the album. Powered by Bemis's nearly out-of-control drive to express himself, the dynamic, guitar-fueled record careens around like the singer/songwriter's own fevered internal monologues, whether charging through the energetic "Alive with the Glory of Love" or wallowing in the self-doubt of "The Futile." Although Bemis's mercurial, over-the-top presence may not appeal to fans of more straightforward punk-pop, the performer's intriguing persona makes REAL BOY a standout emo outing. (Note: The 2006 release includes a bonus disc with seven previously unreleased songs.)
Rolling Stone (p.65) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "SAY ANYTHING is premium emo, with frills..." Entertainment Weekly (p.100) - "Pun-filled stories of despair and twisted come-ons ride on tracks that recall Weezer's orchestrated anthems mixed with Supergrass' boozy pub-punk." -- Grade: B+
