Meyrick Armour Print 1842 Sir Thomas Shernborne 1458 Pl. L, one of 24 in this auction - will combine shipping at no extra charge
A Critical Inquiry into Antient (Ancient) Armour, as it existed in Europe, particularly in Great Britain, from the Norman Conquest to the Reign of King Charles II, by Sir Samuel Rush Meyrick
Hand colored illuminated engravings from the corrected and enlarged second edition of 1842 (printed on Whatman 1845 paper). Sir Meyrick was born into a wealthy family but forfeited the family wealth by running off with a poor Welsh woman. He ultimately did inherit his father's money through tragedy; the fortune originally having been left to Sir Samuel's son, who died young. He developed a love of history early in his life, particularly as it pertained to military regalia, arms and armor. Born in 1783, by the time he was 25 he published his book The History of Cardiganshire which he illustrated. He began collecting armor and amassed a large and notable collection. In 1810 he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and worked on organizing and arranging the collections at both the Tower of London and Windsor Castle. He is best remembered for his Critical Inquiry whose stunning plates assured his reputation. The plates are brilliantly colored.
Size 10¼ inches x 14½ inches (26.5cm by 37cm)
Each print is beautifully hand coloured and many are lavishly illuminated in gold and silver. The print is folio size at 10¼ inches by 14½ inches on top quality white Whatman paper some are watermarked "Whatman 1845". The coloring is absolutely magnificent, of a quality & intensity usually only seen in earlier illuminated manuscripts.
