Samplers originally had two important purposes: it was essential for girls to learn a range of stitches that would be useful to them in their future roles as housewives and mothers, and the finished work served as a reference piece for the woman who had created it. One common element to every sampler however, was that the embroiderer combined her own patterns.

This book is full of countless ideas for different items that can be sewn onto a sampler, with explanatory notes and diagrams for each one. They are divided into subject areas for easy reference: borders, animals, flowers, plants, houses, alphabets, numbers, and combine modern designs with ones taken from old samplers. There are also guidelines on how to combine different items and colours for greatest effect; and some fully worked samplers to illustrate these points. Background information is provided on the right cloth and materials to choose for each project.
