S. Smille Dovedale Derbyshire Quintet Paintings

This is an excellent English School watercolour dating from the Georgian period.

The landscape depicts a quintet of magnificent miniature watercolour paintings. Each painting is skillfully depicted, with the most wonderful detailing, capturing the beauty and essence of this picturesque gorge in the Peak District National Park. A well known beauty spot, the first painting depicts two figures fishing by the lakeside, surrounded with autumnal firs, the rising mountains in the background. The next painting shows a figure fly fishing in the river, two figures walking further on, the tall gagged rocks surrounded by fauna beneath a blue sky. Next two figures walk along a winding road, the fabulous view of the mountains beyond depicted almost in silhouette. Beneath another view of the lakelands and mountains, having the most minute detailing, a stunning piece of art. Lastly, although slightly faded, another panoramic view of the wonderful lakes and mountains, Scots pines to the foreground, with a small cottage to the right. A wonderful set of watercolours from the early 19th Century, George IV period.The work is entitled "Views in Dovedale, Derbyshire" to the In the margin.

The work is signed and dated to the lower left - "S. Smille", "Nov. 1825".

The work is set off by a frame of gesso work with plain moulded decoration, and finished in gilt. The frame is later. The watercolour is mounted on board and has a cream mount.

The watercolour is in good general condition but there are a few marks and blemishes consistent with age.Each of the paintings is generally in good condition, with some minor discolouring and fading in plasex, with minor traces of foxing, consistent with age. The later frame has a few dings and chips, again consistent with age. The work measures - approx 20 X 26 inches (50.8 X 66.04cm) when framed. The image measurements are- approx 4 X 6 inches (10.16 X 15.24cm).
