The artistic processing of bone is an old Russian tradition. Carved bone items from the North enjoyed a world reputation as far back as the seventeenth century. Especially widely know was the output of the bone-carves of Kholmogory (now Lomonosovo) Archangelsk region: their vases, caskets, tobacco-boxes and wine -cups were in heavy demand throughout the eighteen century, when the art was at its peak.
