'Castanets' Framed, Signed Limited Edition Russell Flint Print Overall Size: 55.4cm x 71cm. Image Size: 39.5cm x 53cm Limited Edition Print Run Of Only 750 Real Signature in Pencil bottom right hand corner on margin under picture. Impressed Fine Art Trade Guild stamp bottom left corner in margin under picture. Published by Royal Academy 1959. The print was made from the original watercolour which was exhibited at the Royal Academy as Flint's diploma work in 1933 when he became a full member of the RA. It is therefore, an important picture, marking another turning point in the growth of support for his work. Sir William Russell Flint 1880-1962 Born in Edinburgh. Father Francis Wighton Flint a watercolourist and designer. Attended Daniel Stewarts College. Royal Institution School of Art Edinburgh. 1903 Art Illustrator for Illustrated London News. Also illustrating for book publishers, notably Morte D'Arthur, Canterbury Tales and many more. During the war he was in the Royal Navy Air Service. After the war travelled to France and Spain, which were the inspiration for many of his paintings. 1924 elected Associate of RA. Full member 1933. 1936 President of Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours. During WW11 he and wife Sybil lived on a turkey farm in Devon. Previous naval connections permitted him to have easy access to Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth to paint freely. At the end of the war, returned to Peel Cottage, Campden Hill, London. Knighted in 1947. Painted until he died at 89. This picture is in its original 1950s wood frame, gold coloured slip. Wide cream mount. Condition: Frame has quite a few edge knocks. Inner gold slip, paint flaking. Dust under glass. Slight crease bottom of picture just left of first dancers foot. Again, in centre bottom, by second dancers foot and on right hand edge of third dancer half way up her thigh near margin. Possibly when originally bought it was rolled prior to framing. They aren't staringly obvious, but important for absolute clarity of description. Top right hand corner, 3 in picture and 1 in margin, are small foxing marks. Again not major. Overall, frame is in reasonable condition. Picture is sound. Colours are strong. Signature is strong. A lovely, important Russell Flint picture.
