Rural Riverside Farm Dove Chickens Watercolor Painting

Description: A fine cottage scene watercolour on artist's paper, signed J. Aldous and dating circa 1920. Framed - approx 16 X 18 inches (40.64 X 45.72cm). This is a fine English Traditional watercolour dating from the 1920s period. The cottage scene depicts a woman in Edwardian dress carrying a water pail or bucket across the unmetalled waterside farmyard track, separating the river and meadow from timbered farm buldings, and at her feet - ducks, doves, chickens. At the sweeping river bank, foreground reeds, lush summer growth and bankside trees. Off into the distance, meadows bound the bank with a ricketty fence - half submerged. She makes her way towards a range of farm buildings which frame the left hand side of this rustic scene, the buildings a picturesque combination of differing roof pitches, tile, shingle and tin; timber, shiplap, and brick construction, a mix of window styles and the blank walls of livestock buildings. Rustic benches to the front of the farmhouse hold dairy equipment, milk and butter churns. The eye is carried up the slope of the path, along the side of the buildings towards a stand of dense trees and further cottages. The work is signed J. Aldous lower left.

Date: The watercolour probably dates to around 1920.

Framing: Original classic scroll and floral moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt. It has a mount of gilt

Condition: Condition is good if the pallette is a little mellow with age. One streak of discolouration can be seen to the left hand section of the painting, above the roof of the farmhouse. Whilst this continues through it is less visible against the colour of the buildings. The frame is in very good, excellent condition and appears to be original with the painting having been re-mounted.
