Royal Doulton Lambeth Antique Chine Stoneware Vase Urn

Description:
This is a classic original antique early 20th Century Edwardian period "Royal Doulton" "Lambeth" stoneware "Chine" or lacework urn shaped vase.  The vase stands on a circular foot with blue / brown glazed decoration with gilt edging.  Above this is the urn shaped vase with a mottled blue lacework "chine" snakeskin ground, two 'copper' gilded bands with blue, white and gilded floral 'chrysanthemum' glazed decoration.  Above this is the stylised flared neck of the vase having a brown glazed ground, decorated with yellow / brown acanthus leaves, with a gilded rim and cobalt blue glazed interior.

This style of decoration is known as "Chine" and this technique was the invention of John Slater who was Art Director at Burslem between 1887 and 1936. The technique used was to press lace into the stoneware body while it was still soft. Then it was glazed, decorated and gilded with applied motifs.

The base of the vase bears the "Royal Doulton" impressed stamp with a crown and lion, "Doulton Lambeth England", impressed mark and "F1108" together with impressed decorator's mark "ge" and painted number, appearing to be "H1808H".  A beautiful and impressive piece.

Date:
The vase dates circa 1905.

Condition:
The vase is in excellent condition for its age, having a little wear to the gilded rim, otherwise excellent with no cracks, chips or old restorations.

Dimensions:
Diameter across the base: 4.5 inches (11.4cm)
Diameter across the rim: 4.75 inches (12cm)
Maximum Width: 6.75 inches (17.3cm)
Height:14.75 inches (37.5cm)
