Originally a native of Australia and Tasmania and belonging to the myrtle family, the fresh, crisp, aromatic ‘Eucalyptus globulus’ (also known as the fever tree) was discovered in Tasmania in 1792 by Jacques Labillardiere, a French botanist (1755-1834). It is the most important tree grown for its oil and is commonly known as the "blue gum" or “blue mallee" - Australians often call them gum trees or just gums. Commercial production of eucalyptus oil began in 1860 in Victoria, Australia, which was pioneered by an emigrant (Joseph Bosisto 1824 - 98) from Yorkshire (England). The trees grow fast and straight and often reach tremendous heights. They can grow to over 90 metres tall, taller than any trees but Californian redwoods. In fact, the tallest tree ever known was a eucalyptus which measured over 150 metres in 1872 (Watts River, Victoria, Australia). Although eucalyptus is one of the tallest trees in the world; trees are beheaded to make branches more accessible. It has long, narrow, leathery leaves which are cut, pressed then steamed to make essential oil of eucalyptus (sometimes the branches are also used). The medicinal properties of the oil were most likely first discovered by the Aborigines many hundreds of years ago. Of the 500 species of eucalyptus native to Australia and Tasmania only a small number are grown for their essential oil. It is now grown in many sub-tropical climates including Spain, Portugal, Zimbabwe, and China.
Compounds isolated from eucalyptus leaves were found in 1996 to be highly effective in killing ‘streptococcus mutans’, the bacteria found in the mouth that cause dental decay. The oil is clear with a strong camphoraceous smell that makes it a good insect repellent. Essential oil of eucalyptus is a strong, natural antiseptic and is effective against a wide range of bacterial and viral infections. It’s excellent for clearing the head and helps keep viruses at bay from other people in the home. It is very helpful after sport or any strenuous exercise, either in the bath or blended with emu oil to massage affected areas - add 20 drops to 60ml of emu oil and blend then massage well into the chest, shoulders and rib-cage. As well as being good for the above and effective for stimulating poor circulation, eucalyptus is also good for sore throat infections, colds & flu, rheumatoid arthritis, sinusitis, bronchitis, asthma, herpes simplex, headaches, dandruff, cystitis, head lice, fluid retention, athletes foot, neuralgia, muscular aches & pains, muscular fatigue, emphysema, coughs, swelling, burns, sprains, minor wounds, boils, pimples, insect bites and is a good repellent of insects.

‘UNDERSTANDING AROMATHERAPY’
The Healing Power of Plant Essences
Aromatherapy is a wonderful way of experiencing the many benefits of essential oils (EOs), but you may wonder what these little magic oils are. Also known as aromatherapy oils, they are substances extracted from the roots, stalks, flowers, leaves or fruit of a plant and have numerous and powerful healing properties for promoting health and well-being. Aromatherapy was used in ancient China, Greece and Egypt about 3000 BC, but nobody knows exactly where and when the ancient healing art of aromatherapy began. There is a lot of evidence to suggest the ancient Egyptians used essential oils both as cosmetics and for embalming their dead (cedarwood, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and myrrh), probably to slow down the decomposition process. The medicinal use of plant oils is recorded in some of the earliest Chinese writings and there are records in the Bible of the use of plants and their oils, both in the treatment of illness and for religious purposes. The Romans used essential oils more lavishly to beautify themselves and brought their knowledge to Britain. In the 11th century the Persian philosopher and physician ‘Avicenna’ refined the distillation process and produced much purer essential oils. Their use dwindled in the 1800’s when the civilized world learned how to synthesise medicines so essential oils became a forgotten art until the early 1900’s, when the French chemist/scientist René Maurice Gattefossé, who devoted his life to researching the healing properties of essential oils after a lucky accident in his perfume laboratory…In the accident, he lit his arm on fire and thrust it into the nearest cold liquid, which happened to be a vat of lavender oil. Much to his amazement, the burn quickly healed without a scar - He therefore began investigating lavender and many other essential oils and coined the word ‘Aromatherapy’ in 1928. Later, his work was built on by a French physician, Dr Jean Valnet, and Marguerite Maury, a French biochemist and beautician. Valnet used essential oils to treat cancer, tuberculosis, diabetes and other serious illnesses, and claimed many successful cures. Marguerite Maury developed techniques such as massage and various beauty and skin-care treatments using essential oils. However it was not until the 1970s that it began to achieve widespread popularity. In aromatherapy, only pure and natural essential oils are used.
·An aroma can have an immediate affect on the mind and the body – the faster a stimuli can reach the brain, the faster the effect will take place.
·Aromatherapy works in two ways, Inhalation (tissue, hot water, massage) and Absorption (baths, compresses, application and massage).
·Aromatherapy is free from side effects and suitable for people of all ages.
·Don’t be afraid to use more than one essential oil at a time – aromatherapy works better when essential oils are combined.
‘ABOUT ESSENTIAL OILS’
Nature Provides a Solution that is Often More Suited to the Task
The essential oils that form the basis of treatment in aromatherapy can be used in a number of different ways and combinations to create a desired effect; they can treat almost all illnesses. The most common methods include massaging them into the skin (see recommended carrier oil below), adding them to a bath, burning them in a diffuser, or using them in a compress - they can also be inhaled. Apart from treating illnesses, essential oils are valued for their gently stimulating or calming effects and their ability to bring about a sense of harmony and well-being. They are also able to prevent illness. Essential oils have complex molecular structures and may contain up to several hundred different natural chemicals. Alcohols, esters, ketones, phenols, and aldehydes are those that feature prominently and which have been most closely studied with regard to their therapeutic potential/effects. An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled (most frequently by steam or water) from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. Essential oils, contrary to the use of the word "oil" are not really oily-feeling at all. Most essential oils are clear, but some oils such as patchouli, orange and lemongrass are amber or yellow in colour. Essential oils contain the true essence of the plant it was derived from and are highly concentrated; a little goes a long, long way. Essential oil is also known as volatile oil and ethereal oil. It may also be referred to as "oil of" the raw plant material from which it was extracted, such as essential oil of rosemary. The term essential is intended to convey that the oil is an essence of the plant it is extracted from, and not in the more common sense of being indispensable; do not confuse them with essential fatty acids.
·Essential oils are absorbed through the skin directly into the bloodstream via carriers such as water (baths, compresses), lotions, creams and oils (application and massage).
·When essential oils are added to water they stimulate the skin and have a muscle-relaxing effect. They also help nervous tension, headache, fatigue, muscular aches and pains, colds and flu, period pains etc, etc and can be a great pick-me-up.
·All essential oils are antiseptic and are a useful addition to your first aid kit.
·Don’t apply pure, undiluted essential oils directly to the skin except in emergencies such as insect bites and stings, or if using tea tree on its own.
·Don’t swallow any essential oils unless they are supplied by a trained aromatherapist and used under her/his supervision.
All Pure Essential Oils Are Ready for Use in the Following Ways
·Steam and Inhalation:6-8 drops of the appropriate essential oil on a paper tissue or handkerchief or in a basin of warm water and inhale – not asthmatics.
·Massage or Application:20 drops in 60ml carrier oil (emu oil) or carrier lotion to be messaged into the affected area. For single applications use 2-3 drops in one teaspoon carrier oil (emu oil) or lotion.
·Bath:8-10 drops in a bath – relax and soak in the warm bath for 10-15 minutes.
·Foot and Hand Baths:8-10 drops in a bowl of warm water – steep for 10-15 minutes.
·Compress: Soak the compress in approximately ½ pint (300ml) of water (hot or cold, depending on the problem) to which 8-10 drops of essential oil have been added. Occasionally neat essential oil on a small compress can be very affective, especially for abscesses and bruises.
·Gargle or Mouthwash: 2-4 drops stirred into a small glass of warm water.
·Neat Application:Once significant essential oil knowledge is gained should you ever attempt to apply an undiluted essential oil on the skin, except in emergencies such as insect bites and stings, or if using tea tree on its own.
·Room Freshener: Put 10-15 drops into an oil burner/vaporiser (with carrier) or small bowl of water and place somewhere like a radiator shelf or similar. A kitchen paper towel can also be used and placed on the radiator itself.
·Perfume: Mix your own perfume with vodka (use highest-proof available). Perfumes are strongest containing 15-25% essential oils with a small percentage of distilled water. Use a glass container for preparing and storing and allow your blend to age for a few weeks/months in a cool, dark place.
·Essential Oil Teas: Do not take essential oils as a medicine except on the advice of a qualified practitioner, but it is safe to drink two or three drops of a suitable oil in a cup of black tea, hot or cold, twice a day for digestive problems, urinary problems and stress.
Recommended Carrier Oilfor Optimum Therapeutic Effect: Anything that ‘‘carries’’ an essential oil into the body is known in aromatherapy as a carrier. Vegetable oils and white lotion are the most common carriers for application to the body. For aromatherapy emu oil (see page 4, Emu Oil – a natural substance) is probably the best as it retains all its natural, vital and beneficial magical properties and is able to penetrate the three layers of human skin…It is absorbed immediately, leaving a grease-free, smooth skin. It is non-comedogenic (does not clog up pours), which makes it unique in helping the skin breath, and absorb the vital loss of essential fatty acids, Sapogens (skin softener) and vitamins A & E obtained in this oil. Also, the essential fatty acids found naturally in emu oil mimic those found in the human bodyand will help to return the skin to its natural barrier function.Emu oil is a unique, almost 100% triglyceride lipid, which is phospho-lipid deficient and therefore excellent for skin penetration, it can penetrate through and condition multiple layers of skin.It contains Omega 3, 6 and 9 with a composition of Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) that mirror human skin, it carries large active compounds through the skin barrier. Note: It isvital that the emu oil is of an equally high quality (Rolls~Choyce Essentials is of the highest quality) as the essential oils which you use (All our essential oils are also of the highest quality), as it makes up at least 96% of the mix and can dramatically affect the quality of a blend. NOTE: Emu oil is derived from emus being processed for their meat and not for their oil. It is a by-product which would simply be wasted had an application not been developed for it.
CAUTIONS
1.Essential oils should never be used neat on the skin…unless in an emergency for such things as burns, bruises and wounds etc.Undiluted use of lavender and tea tree, however, should only be done on rare occurrences as severe sensitivity still could occur in some individuals.
2.Do not take essential oils internally unless under the supervision of a trained and qualified aromatherapy practitioner.Treat the oils like medicines that are poison in unknowing hands.
3.Keep essential oils away from children and out of the eyes, and keep them out of the way of fire hazards.
4.Wormood, pennyroyal, onion, camphor, horseradish, wintergreen, rue, bitter almond and sassafras are some of the essential oils that should only be used by qualified aromatherapy practitioners, if ever at all.
5.However, if you have an acute or serious problem, see your doctor.
