PETER PAN:  A CLASSIC
COLLECTIBLE POP-UP
by
ROBERT SABUDA

U.S. 1st Edition/1st Printing HANDSIGNED by Robert Sabuda on the
 opening spread.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

In the relatively short span of his career, ROBERT SABUDA has become recognized as the world's foremost innovator of pop-up technology. He is the creator of many breathtaking pop-up books, including "America the Beautiful," "Dinosaurs," "Sharks," and "The Chronicles of Narnia Pop-Up, "Winter's Tale," "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and "Peter Pan" -- all of which were New York Times bestsellers.

FROM THE CRITICS:

"It creates a fanciful world of its own... [Peter Pan is] a treasure for anyone to own, young or old --
especially for those who refuse to grow up.
"
--PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (starred review)

2008 New York: Simon & Schuster.   In this retelling of the classic story of Neverland, pirates, and flying, Robert Sabuda's elegant text and paper engineering give new life to favorite charcters like Tinkerbell, Wendy, Michael, and John, and, of course, Peter Pan.  Continuing to innovate, Sabuda enhances the already powerful enchantments of J.M. Barrie's classic 1902 tale with astonishing paper engineering.

Each of the six page spreads in PETER PAN has an amazing pop-up in the center as well as a collection of smaller pages—each with more pop-ups—that tell the story of Peter Pan. Altogether there are 28 pop-ups.  It's an awfully big adventure.

The first spread is a tour de force -- the nighttime cityscape of London from above. You have to look twice, but the swirling clouds hide mermaids, an Indian princess, Mr. Smee and Captain Hook. The moon shows Peter's young profile. It's stunning, and moving. Imagination and adventure are literally tucked in the clouds.  To the left, the text begins on narrow pages that unfold to include pop-ups of Nana, Wendy stitching Peter's shadow and more.

As PETER PAN continues, Sabuda's work becomes more surprising.  Captain Hook slides down a hollow tree; on a final climactic spread, an entire pirate ship pops up—masts, Jolly Roger and all.  Delightful details are everywhere.  On the mermaid page, the scales and a mirror are metallic silver.  The pop-up of the crocodile who finally eats Captain Hook has a silver hook deep in its throat. The book itself is a full two-and-a-half inches thick, and constructed with super-heavy-duty paper.

Sabuda's beautiful pop-ups in PETER PAN are further complemented by full color illustrations that pull readers even deeper into the magical world that is Neverland.  The full-color artwork is loose and expressive, with bold black outlines and an almost woodcut style.  The dreamy mood it evokes fits the story's flights of imagination.  Illustrations suggest a hybrid of period styles, somewhere between arts and crafts, with their rich patterning, and art nouveau, with their Tiffany glass-like outlines and colorations.

This copy of PETER PAN:  A CLASSIC COLLECTIBLE POP-UP is a U.S. hardcover First Edition/First Printing in AS NEW/UNREAD condition. It has the appropriate number line descending through "1" and has been safely stored in its original plastic sleeve with free endsheet.  Its pop-ups are crisp and unopened and it is a pristine copy suitable for collectors. It was signed by Robert Sabuda on the opening spread at a signing event in his and Matthew Reinhart's honor on May 12, 2009 at Borders Books in Northridge, CA.

The last few years have been some of the richest ever for the world of pop-up books.  Robert Sabuda is at the very forefront of the exciting genre of paper engineering, as it's called within the publishing industry. Children's fiction is now one of the fastest growing book categories in the collectible market, and pop-up books have become the #1 item to collect. In a recent profile in Newsweek Magazine, Robert Sabuda stated that half of the buyers of his books are adults buying for themselves, and that he views his books as being for "4- to 94-year-olds."

It's my firm belief that today's pop-ups are tomorrow's most collectible books.  Don't miss your chance to bid on this timeless PETER PAN pop-up!
