Discovered by producer/writer Pete Waterman in 1985 working at Waterman's PWL studios, Rick Astley's debut single, "Never Gonna Give You Up", topped the UK chart, became the biggest UK single of 1987 (winning a BRIT Award), and helped to make him the top singles act of the year. His debut album, WHENEVER YOU NEED SOMEBODY, also reached number 1 in the UK and sold over a million copies. When Astley was launched in the USA in 1988, he was an instant success, the first artist in the 80s to top the US charts with his first two singles "Together Forever" and "Never Gonna Give You Up". Under the wing of Stock, Aitken And Waterman, Astley recorded seven UK and four US Top 10 singles before leaving the production team. He achieved one more major success with the 1991 ballad "Cry For Help," which reached the Top 10 in both the UK and the US--parent album FREE also made the UK top 10--but when the follow-up, BODY AND SOUL failed to chart Astley disappeared from the UK music scene until re-emerging in 2005 with the covers album, PORTRAITS.
