Richardson Boats Covington of Florence SC 1936 Article
"Over a Dam in a Richardson"
"A novel method of getting around a set of frozen locks in a canal was brought to light recently in a communication from the owner of a Richardson Little Giant cruiser who was the first man to complete a traverse of the newly completed section of inland waterway between Little River and Georgetown. As the trip was made in the dead of winter, considerable ice and snow were encountered but the men aboard the Richardson cruiser reported no inconvenience in living aboard the cruiser at any time. The boat, "Rotary Ann' by name, powered with a Gray 6-51 motor and owned by W.B. Covington of Florence, South Carolina, left Fayetteville, North Carolina, on February 21, beginning the trip on the Cape Fear River in a blinding snowstorm. During the tie-up that night the crew had to pour boiling water over the lines several times to make them flexible enough to handle. The next morning, on reaching Lock number 2 the party found that the lock gates were frozen shut and could not be opened for several days. Not cherishing the idea of waiting any such length of time, Covington decided to go over the dam, which at the time had seven feet of water over it, with a drop of about four feet. The ordinary drop is about ten to fifteen feet. Starting back up the river some 400 yards, the Little Giant was given the gun, shot to the top of the dam and plunged over into the boiling waters below. She is said to have executed a graceful dive, taking no solid water on deck and suffering no harm in any way. The trip was completed uneventfully, through to Little River and on to Georgetown, "Rotary Ann" being the first boat to make passage through this new cut."
