French pianist Richard Clayderman has enriched the lives of millions with his performances and made countless women swoon with his charm and good looks. Since his first hit, 'Ballade Pour Adeline’ which sold 22 million copies and set him on the path to superstardom, he has released more than 800 titles and received 263 gold and 63 platinum discs. A 1987 debut concert appearance in China was screened on AsiaVision to an audience of over 800 million.
In Britain, he has – at last count – registered 14 chart albums, a list that started in 1982 with an eponymous effort that reached Number 2 and includes collaborations with James Last and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Neither has he been afraid to ring the stylistic changes: musical tributes to the Carpenters and Andrew Lloyd Webber and a combination of standards from Hollywood and Broadway have all proved best-sellers, and are sampled here.

The career of French pianist Richard Clayderman has not only enriched the lives of millions but makes fascinating reading, too. Since 'Ballade Pour Adeline’, which sold 22 million copies and set him on the path to superstardom, he has released more than 800 titles and received 263 gold and 63 platinum discs. A 1987 debut concert appearance in China was screened on AsiaVision to an audience of over 800 million, while the subsequent decade and a half has seen many more pages added to his unique success story.
But it’s musical riches that have proved the key – and the boy born Philippe Pages in Paris in 1953 was already a keen pianist at the tender age of six. That’s not surprising, really, since his father was a music teacher and his grandfather gave him his first piano. Who knows what grand’pere said, though, when, after studying at the Paris Conservatoire of Music, the boy rebelled and decided he wanted to become a rock star? He worked as a backing musician with the likes of Johnny Halliday and Michel Sardou, but was not destined to remain in their shadow for long
The turning point came in 1976 when Richard met Delphine record-label owners Olivier Toussaint and Paul De Senneville. The latter had written 'Ballade Pour Adeline' for his daughter, and the lilting instrumental would soon become a Clayderman theme tune. His combination of popular classics and classic pop, embellished by those trademark strings (often arranged by Toussaint), has proved timeless and ensured his army of fans has kept on growing.
He works hard, making some 200 concert appearances a year to maintain his worldwide profile, but when not touring or recording he likes to relax at his home in Antibes, near Nice, on the French Riviera. Clayderman is a vegetarian who neither smokes nor drinks alcohol; spending two hours a day at the keyboard to ensure his skills are kept in tip-top condition. So don’t be fooled by the easy-listening tag: making music this good takes dedication!
Fans know Richard Clayderman as ‘The Prince of Romance’ after the compliment paid by First Lady Nancy Reagan when he played for her at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. You may not be well-heeled enough to afford a command performance from the faultless Frenchman – but this album is surely the next best thing…
