Home built recumbent bike This recumbent is the outcome of an engineering project i built this year. It is based around a 24" wheel MTB frame with a 20" front wheel and forks. The frame is steel, the front boom part has been welded to a reinforcement plate then welded to the head tube, the front chainset is an alloy 'Stronglight 200LX' set with a 42 tooth chainring, this runs direct to the inner ring, also a 42, of a double chainset (an old ofmega 'mondial') that has had the crank removed, the outer 52 ring then drives the rear wheel. via a 14/28 6 speed rear freewheel. The rear wheel is an alloy rimmed, steel hub 24" MTB rim (36 spoke), with solid axle, the front wheel is a steel rimmed, steel hub 20" BMX wheel, also solid axle (36 spoke). Braking is achieved using alloy BMX calipers front and rear, though there are mounting bosses for 'V' or cantilevers at the rear. Rear mech is a sunrace all resin type (indexed). tyres front and back are 'schwalbe - crazy bobs'. Steering is via a tiller style stem, this hinges at the handle bar stem to come to rest just above your hips when riding, it can be pivoted up and down whilst riding which might appear strange at first but does allow for different arm positions. The seat is padded, black toweling covered plywood. Several parts of the machine have been salvaged from other bikes, such as donor frame parts, front wheel, chainsets etc. many other parts; frame, tyres, brake calipers, handlebar stems, headset, rear mech etc. were purchased new. There is some adjustment to the front boom and seat. I have, however, mounted the chain tensioner at the front through the boom with a bolt, so if the boom needed lengthening or shortening, this bolt would need to be relocated. the seat has about 2 inches of adjustment. I am 5' 11" with a 33" inside leg to give some idea as to its current set-up. As this is a project I can offer no guarantee as to its longevity or otherwise. it has been ridden several times, the furthest outing being about 10 mile, with no problems. The condition of the machine is generally very good, there are however some small scratches and marks on the frame from storage and the salvaged components from use. I think there is still plenty of scope to add to this project if you so desired, otherwise its ready to go as it is. I have since built another recumbent so now need to clear some space in the garage.
