Rare Set Of Four Aesthetic H&B En Grisaille Majolica Relief Plates

This is a superb set of four French plates, Aesthetically decorated en grisaille with Japanese scenes, in relief. The plates were produced by the firm of H&B Cie, (Hippolyte Boulenger), of Choisy Le Roi. They produced majolica wares between 1863 and 1910, and the style of these would indicate the latter part of the 19th century. The company’s forward thinking attracted various potters from Europe, including several from the foremost Majolica manufacturer Minton. These plates depict four different scenes, and could almost be interpreted as seasons. They measure around 8 ½ inches in diameter, and all are free from chips or cracks. All, however, have glaze crazing all over both front and rear. A stunning, rare set of plates.
