A short biography of Robert Burns:
Robert, born in Alloway on 25th January, 1759, was the eldest of seven children of William Burnes, a market gardener from Kirkoswald. William Burnes (his children dropped the "e" from the name) acquired 7.5 acres of land in Alloway and with his own hands built on it a cottage of whitewashed clay walls- "The Auld Clay Biggin".
In 1776 when Robert was only seven his father rented a small farm 1.5 miles away at Mount Oliphant and the family moved there. Robert grew up to a life of toil, hardship and poverty. But his father saw to it that his sons were well educated. Robert read all the books he could and developed a remarkable command of literary English. The other great influence on him was folk-song. His mother knew and sang many old songs, although she could not read.
It was in 1777 that the family moved to Lochlea farm, near Tarbolton , where his father died worn out early in 1784. Robert and his brother Gilbert rented the farm of Mossgeil, near Mauchline, and struggled on. Robert was to become an enthusiastic Freemason. He had already written many songs and in 1785 began writing satires and "epistles" which, handed about in copies, won him a local celebrity. A love affair with a Mauchline girl, Jean Armour, who later boure him twins, landed him in trouble. Under threat of prosecution by her father, and hard pressed for money, he gave up his share of Mossgeil to Gilbert and planned to emigrate to Jamaica; he decided to print his poems in Kilmarnock to raise funds for the voyage. The Kilmarnock Edition (1786) was enthusiastically received, and praised in the Edinburgh magazines. Burns gave up emigration, went to Edinburgh to publish a second edition, and was lionised there. In 1787-88 he was briefly entangled with an Edinburgh Lady, Mrs MacLehose (Clarinda). But he married Jean Armour; it was a happy marriage and they had several children.
Robert burns wanted to give up farming, but his Edinburgh friends could find him nothing better than a minor post in the Excise in Dumfriesshire, and he had to take another farm there, Ellisland, in 1788. He proved a good officer, was promoted twice and in 1791 gave up Ellisland Farm and moved into the town of Dumfries. He published a revised third edition of his poems in Edinburgh (1793) and died in Dumfries on 21st July, 1796, of heart disease (endocarditis) induced by the rheumatic fever he suffered in his early years.
He lived to be only 37.
His death occurred on the same day as his wife Jean gave birth to his last son, Maxwell.
On the day of his burial more than 10,000 people came to watch and pay their respects. However, his popularity then was nothing compared to the heights it has reached since.
