rare Marstons Inn mat from The Shropshire Arms Trench
BBCS Cat No.211 - issued 1979
This is one of the rarest, if not the rarest, of some 200 different mats that were issued for individual Marstons pubs between 1979 and 1983, although most were issued in 1979. They all have the same basic design, with one or more details from the name(s) of the licensee, the name of the pub, the location of the pub, and the telephone number all appearing on the inn sign.
Most of the mats are relatively common, but about half a dozen or so are really difficult to find. Perhaps the pub changed hands before the mats were delivered so the new licensee threw them all away as they had the wrong licensee's name on. I know of one where there was a divorce, and the licensee threw all the mats away because they had the soon to ex wife's name on as well as his own!
The mat is square, and measures 9.4cm from side to opposite side.
Marstons is now part of the Wolverhampton & Dudley group of breweries, which has adopted the Marstons name as it (arguably) has a better national image than the Banks's name.
Thank you for looking, and good luck in the auction.
