Thank You.

Soay sheep are one of Britain's native breeds, from the Hebridean island of  St Kilda. They are now classed as a rare breed. These horny creatures have a distinctive soft brown or tan fleece, which becomes lightened on the tips, by the weather. This item has been produced from a small flock in northern Scotland, where we have a long history of producing fine wool & cloth

  • The fleece in the top picture is the actual one up for auction. It is still just as it was when it came off the sheep & has been stored in my barn, in a wool bag, since the end of July, when we did our shearing. As you can see, it has a fabulous mix of tan fibres, with sun-bleached tips.
  • Raw (unwashed) fleece retains all of its natural lanolin. It has not been dagged & skirted, but the most offensive parts have been removed. These animals live & graze on natural hillsides, so there is a little annoying vegetation & general debris in the wool. You may even come across a sprig of "lucky heather".
  • From small Scottish flock of sheep, grazed on natural pasture (not registered as organic, but raised according to organic principles).
  • Soay fleece is popular with spinners, weavers & felt makers, due to its soft texture & the yarn is usually used for speciality hand knitting.
  • Beautifully soft after a light wash.
  • Staple length 5cm-15cm (Wool Marketing Board). This one is nearer to 5cm than 15cm.
  • Quality 44's to 50's (Wool Marketing Board) .
  • This auction is for approx. 1200g. As wool is a natural absorbent fibre, its weight will change slightly, depending on humidity. I find that the weight  is reduced by about 20% after a light wash, due to removal of dust & some of the lanolin.

Bidding starts from just 1p.

How can you resist such an investment ?
