Shim kit for Setting Tappet pre-load on the Rover V8 engine.

What you get in this listing
A complete set of 16 Stainless Steel Shims, designed and produced exclusively for our own needs in sizes 15 thou and 36 thou, with 8 of each. That would normally be enough for any rebuilt engine that had not been over extensively machined with regards to valve location or with excessive lift/duration or head resurfacing/machining, if so, an additional kit would normally be required in such instances. If you are not sure then please enquire.
This kit also includes detailed instructions with easy to understand pictures on how to easily check & set tappet pre-load including  'a dibble stick'. (Well we could not think of a better name) that helps you to check the pre-load before installation of required shims.

Why would I need this kit?
If you are just replacing the cam shaft and lifters, Piper (is our recommendation) Kent, Isky, Crane, Std. Rover or any other Cam kit, or rebuilding your Rover V8 engine with an alternative cam choice  you will require this kit. As setting the tappet pre-load is very important if you want to avoid problems.
Even though the V8 Engine employes hydraulic tappets that would have been installed with corrected tolerance levels when the engine was new you must make provision for resetting such tolerances with any V8 engine when any part of the valve train, Camshaft area, or Cylinder head surfaces have been altered, this also applies to engines that are in receipt of heads that were not the original ones.  Regardless of being machined or not as all have differnet height tolerances that can play havoc with true tappet pre-load settings

What Problems could you expect
Basically if you have to much pre-load the valves will not completely close at high rpm causing total loss of power with added danger of valve to piston contact (very expensive) and if the pre load is too slight then tappets will become very noisy, and in both instances increased exhaust emissions would be resultant with high Hydro Carbons, (unburnt fuel) and all this so easily avoided with a little care and attention checking and setting pre-load.
