ROYAL NAVY Cruiser HMS Eclipse 1894 ship - CRUIS001

 


The 1894, British, Royal Navy Cruiser, HMS Eclipse.

HMS Eclipse, was launched at Portsmouth on 19th July 1894. She was retired in August 1921. 

A 5,600 ton, second-class cruiser, she was the lead ship in her class and the seventh of eight RN ships to have carried this name.

The vessel was periodically used for officer-cadet training. Boys were taken to sea to receive practical lessons in engineering, seamanship and navigation - and to find their 'sea legs'.  Among these trainees in 1907, at the age of thirteen, was Edward Prince of Wales, latterly King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom. Coincidentally the future king was born in the same year Eclipse was launched.
