Reviews Review The first series of the BBC’s Saturday night reimagining of Robin Hood pretty much set the scene for what you can expect from this follow-up run. Historical accuracy? You can forget about that, as it’s chucked out along with parts of the Robin Hood legend itself, in favour of a rollicking good evening in front of the telly. With Jonas Armstrong in the title role, this second series once more pits Robin Hood against the nasty Sheriff of Nottingham, played with utmost glee by Keith Allen. There’s also Lucy Griffiths’ Maid Marian, Gordon Kennedy in fine form as Little John and Harry Lloyd as Will Scarlett among the talented cast, who are clearly having a ball. The show’s strengths are its commitment to outright entertainment, and a sense of humour that guarantees a good chuckle or two every episode. Mixed in with some fun action sequences, Robin Hood is at its best with your critical faculties set to neutral, and your brain set to simply enjoy some grand primetime fun. Granted, there are holes in the narrative you could ride a coach through, and not too much bears close inspective, but this second series builds well on the first, and sets the scene for a potentially explosive third season in 2009. Awesome!
I bought this becuase I wanted to rewatch the episodes anytime. I love the DVD extras, although not all the extras are on the last DVD (some are on the discs 1-4) but it's nice to listen to the actors talking you through an episode it gives you a greater understanding. And just rewatching Jonas Armstrong, wow!
Design congratulations
Content goes without saying (especially with the gorgeous Richard Armitage) but the packaging deserves an award - don't put it in a cupboard - it would enhance your coffee table.
Great DVD set
Watched part of this on TV so was thrilled when I was able to buy it from amazon at a great price.
DVDs contain Regional Codes which can
be used to prevent the playback of certain discs depending upon the geographical
area it is played in. The various studios and home video companies lobbied to make
sure this coding system was a required part of the current DVD standards, because
they wish to control how their DVD titles are exported to other countries. (For
example, while a recent film may already have played theatrically in the United
States and been released to the home video market, that same film may not yet have
opened in some European or Asian countries.) In most instances, discs manufactured
in one region will usually only play on players that were manufactured for that
same region - this means that discs bought or imported from Japan will not play
on U.S. players, and vice versa.
Some DVDs, however, are coded for Region 0 - which means they will play in any of
the six regular regions. There are also DVD players that don't check the region
coding of the DVD so will play any disc from any region - these are generally referred
to as Code Free players or Multi Region DVD Players.
