SAXON GOLD
This auction is for a rare chance to purchase a piece of Saxon gold, this piece is from either a brooch or pendant. The stone is missing but as you can see its been cut rather than broken wich suggests this could have been an item hacked up by the vikings and use in trade.
The Vikings used pieces of silver / gold hacked (cut) from coins and jewelry. Hack silver was used as payment for merchandise. The Vikings often weighed the silver for payment, so when an item weighed more than they needed to pay they would hack off the excess or add more to make up the payment, this would simply be hacked from a coin or a piece of jewelry. This suggests the silver was more valuable than the value of the coin or jewelry itself again this is reflected in the large amount of hacked pieces of coins and jewelery found in Viking hoards from all over Europe and the Islamic Lands.
This item is from my own collection wich I am selling to make way for new material. The details of purchase and history around the items will be given to the highest bidder.
