RARE Pre Columbian Pottery FIGURE Wearing Bird Mask
|
Teotihuacan, Mexico
Maya Pre Classic Period, ca. 300-600 AD.
Lovely stylize human figure seated with legs extended with heels together and tips of fingers at knees. The figure wears an elaborate avian mask with a wide curved beak and large round eyes surrounded with plumage. A large round flowering bud is found at nose and another held between the heels of the feet, likely this is peyote. In Mesoamerica,
the entheogenic cactus
peyote was used in spiritual practices. The drug
was used by cults for their hallucinogenic effects; peyote was adopted
for explicit and implicit religious functions and purposes. The figure
does exhibit a degree of exuberance associated with hallucinogens. RARE & Unusual piece with excellent eye appeal. Material: Hand-formed red-buff pottery. Condition: Excellent, intact No repairs. Length: 3-1/4 in. (8.5 cm).
Ex Private East Coast Collection. Formerly in the collection of Imre & Nicholas T Molnar, acquired 1960-1978.
