An attractive and interesting photo of some of the crew of the S.V.(Sailing Vessel) Midnight Sun, taken by the photographers Fradelle and Young of London in the late 1800s.
The picture is titled along the bottom "A.86654 STEWARDS GROUP, S.V. MIDNIGHT SUN, 4TH CRUISE".
I am not an expert in this area, but so far as I can make out, the MIDNIGHT SUN was a steamship built in Glasgow 1874, and sailed originally under the name of the GENERAL WERDER.
It was sold in 1893 and renamed the MIDNIGHT SUN, then was used for cruises to Norway. The life belt bears the words "MIDNIGHT SUN NEWCASTLE" so I presume it must have sailed out of Newcastle upon Tyne???
The photo is in pretty good condition, though it is very slightly faded- as you would expect of an image of this age. The frame is in poor condition and the glass is missing.
The frame bears the label of a Keswick framer - T. DUMBLE - on the reverse.
Actual photo size 10.5" by 8.5"; frame size - 17.25" by 14" .
This is an interesting and rare item - don't miss it !!!!
