36 By 24 Inches. Oil on canvas. A very scarce painting of Gandhi by acclaimed painter Clare Winsten. After studying at the Slade School from 1910 to 1912, her works appeared at the important exhibition held by the Whitechapel Art Gallery in May 1914, which showcased many new and radical artists alongside Continental artists such as Pissaro and Modigliani as well as strong homegrown talent such as Jacob Epstein. Clare married Samuel Weinstein, a member of the 'Whitechapel Boys' group of Jewish writers and artists, and her husband opened doors to London's literati. Weinstein anglicised his name to Winsten. As neighbours of George Bernard Shaw, Clare painted him and even produced a bronze sculpture of the writer. Moving in artistic circles she also painted Shostakovich and Benjamin Britten. This painting of Gandhi comes from the Winsten family and was produced from sketches made at the time of Gandhi's visit to England for the Round Table Conference of 1930-31. Contemporary oil paintings of Gandhi are extremely rare and very few have ever appeared on the market. This one is in excellent condition and shows no damage. It is framed in a simple, contemporary gilt and dark green frame and shows the great man swathed in a large white cloak, in contemplative mood.
