Hester Bateman Sterling Silver Ladle

Made in Bunhill Row London circa 1761.

A Very RARE Good Georgian Sterling Silver Ladle.  With a Turned Wooden handle.  The bowl with a gilt interior and decorated with engraved and punched Floral Decoration, the bottom of the bowl with a rubbed fluted decoration leading to the central portion where the mark is clear.  The ladle of great charm and quality. Silver tip to handle unmarked. The gilt interior very reasonable condition, overall this is a very RARE early Hester Bateman piece in good condition, made with great skill. The twisted wooden handle opening very slightly in a couple of places, as normal in pieces of this age. Handle is tight and firm into the bowl . Handle also of some quality as twisted on top half of stick only. Quality!   The handle coming into the bowl in silver finished withy a delightful heart shape, difficult to see, unless turned in the hand to appreciate, and all the more lovely for it. Like all hearts difficult to understand at first sight all the more appreciated once undertsood.

The hallmark that of Hester Bateman as shown in photo in Grimwades book also mentioned page 76 as her first mark circa 1761. Early work by Hester is very difficult to find. In her first years on her own, she mostly  made for other silversmiths under their marks. The ladle is therefore very rare.  Her husband John died in Novemebr 1760 and her first mark registered 1761. This piece has the charm and quality and importantly her usual wonderful undertsanding of dimension and form.
