A COLLECTION OF A LIFETIME!!
ANTIQUE AFGHANISTAN NOMAD FELT HANGINGS
"DECORATION FOR THE YURT/GER/HOME"
Up for auction is one of many listings coming your way from a seller that spent her long life traveling around the world. She now has started to scale down her belongings to move into a smaller home. You will be impressed with the quality and variety of her collection!
This listing features an intriging handmade wool felt band made to decorate the nomad Asian home called a Yurt or Ger. The seller bought it for $150 dollars (still has the receipt) in Santa Monica, California in 1978. She believes it to be made in the late 18's but we cannot document the age.
First created by the ancient Mongols in the 6th Century, called "the Felt Tent People" and still used by nomads today, the yurt was a portable home, approx. 9' high and 15' in diameter, to be used as they moved with their grazing herds. It consisted of a round, collapsible wooden frame covered in wool felt. The interior has to be set up in a very particular way in every yurt with the door facing the south and an alter across from the door. Although a prescribed set-up of furnishings was followed, the nomads could use handmade decorations to give their homes color and excitement.
One of the decorations used is a colorful band hung around the yurt at "ceiling" height. This particular band was made in Afghanistan and represents many nomad tribes still in existence, such as the Mongols.
The exposed side of the band is made of red wool felt, the interior of cotton cloth. From the band hang tassels & braids 1/2" apart hand made of colorful cotton, some extended by covered wire. Some also have beads interlaced with cotton thread or wire.
There is more complicated weavings and hangings on about 20" of the band, possibly where the door opening was.
There is a tag glued to one tassel stating "Made in Afghanistan".
Measurements: The overall length of the band is approximately 21' and the band itself is 2-1/2" in width.
Condition: Very good with all tassels intact; The upper edges of the band have some worn areas where the fabric was pieced.
A Cultural treasure!
