Metal, pin back reproduction of the broach badge of  the 'Caterpillar Club' of the ROYAL AIR FORCE. Great Britain and other allied countries aircrew were awarded this semi-official badge, for making a successful parachute jump fron a damaged aircraft, and having his like saved by using an Irvin parachute and were allowed to wear it on the pocket of their uniform.

It was first given out in the 1920's.

They were originally a 10k gold pinback broach, with name of recipient engraved on the back .

This 'Gold metal' version has red stones for eyes and is pinback - there is no engraving on the back

A certificate was originally issued with the badge stated "The member of the Caterpillar Club, having his life saved by parachute".

These were strictly unofficial awards and were not authorized for wear on the RAF uniform.

There is reference to them being worn on the underside of the lapel on the service dress uniform and/or sewn to the underside of the pocket flap on Battle Dress. In any event, they were not overtly visible. .

This has been specially manufactured based on the metal version, which is difficult to find,

There is a myth that the red eyes were awarded for dropping over land from an aircraft shot down in flames and the blue eyes were awarded for a parachute landing in the sea.

Recent research has revealed that normally red eyed caterpillars were awarded - but these red eyes were not avalable towards the end of the war and the blue/emerald eyes were introduced as a short term solution.
