PREADAMITES;

OR A DEMONSTRATION OF

THE EXISTENCE OF MEN BEFORE ADAM

This auction is for an original 1880 edition of "PREADAMITES; OR A DEMONSTRATION OF THE EXISTENCE OF MEN BEFORE ADAM" by Alexander Winchell, LL.D. THIS BOOK IS OUTRAGEOUS!!! but the fact that a man of Prof. Winchell's prominence in the scientific world has essayed the Herculean task, lends special interest to his book. This book couples a study of man's condition, antiquity, racial affinities and progressive dispersion over the earth.

Pre-Adamite hypothesis or Preadamism is the religious belief that humans existed before Adam, the first human being named in the Bible. This belief has a long history, probably having its origins in early pagan responses to Abrahamic claims regarding the origins of the human race.  Advocates of this hypothesis are known as "preadamites", as are the humans believed by them to have existed before Adam.

The author's attempts, through this work, was to discus without prejudice, the evidences bearing on the very question of Preadamites. Due to provocations of his previous works, this book basically defends these views. The central idea of the work is human preadamitism, all other views presented are subsidiary or collateral. Yet in a bold attempt with an unusual blend of contemporary evolutionary thinking and pre-Adamism, the Vanderbilt University theistic evolutionist and geologist argued in his 1878 tract Adamites and Preadamites for the pre-Adamic origins of the human race, on the basis that the Negroes were too racially inferior to have developed from the Biblical Adam. Winchell also believed that the laws of evolution operated according to the will of God. Within this book, the author has attempted to show that the old hypothesis of the descent of the Black races from Ham is equally unscriptural and unscientific. As quoted: "Finally, assuming the thesis proved, I have endeavored to gratify the natural and intelligent curiosity which expresses itself in the questions: WHO, THEN WERE THE FIRST MEN? WHERE DID THEY APPEAR, AND HOW LONG SINCE? HOW HAVE THE RACES COME INTO EXISTENCE, AND WHAT HAS BEEN THE METHOD OF THEIR DISPERSION OVER THE EARTH?”

Again, in his defense, he has not assumed a hostile position towards the Bible as he devotes a chapter to the proof that preadamitism is neither inconsistent with the Bible nor with the orthodoxy of approved divines. He hasn't disputed the divine creation of Adam nor impaired the unity of mankind, but removed the incredibility of that "doctrine as grounded in the descent of Negroes and Australians from Noah and Adam." In entering this work, the author entertained the concept that this volume should be unimpeachably popular, but felt the propriety of accompanying the argument with some array of scientific support and authoritative opinion.

The author's ANALYTICAL CONSPECTUS is broken down by means of four discussions which break into various sub-categories as noted in the pictures below:

I. THE DATA OF THE DISCUSSION

II. THE AFFIRMATIVE ARGUMENT

III. THE NEGATIVE ARGUMENT

IV. PENDANTS TO THE DISCUSSION

Published in 1880, this book is in GOOD CONDITION! especially for being 129 YEARS OLD! It is abundantly illustrated with original engravings showing typical race peculiarities and with several well executed charts. There is a 12"X 22" chart of the PROGRESSIVE DISPERSION OF MANKIND explained through BLACK, BROWN AND WHITE RACES. It is attached in place in the back of the book. The hinges, binding, and contents are firm. The text block is neat and clean despite some pencil marks. Most of them are tiny marks within the margin area. Very SLIGHT underlining. Although it is present, its appearance does not interfere with the text or enjoyable reading.  All 500 pages are present! Although this book is politically incorrect by today's standards, these types of books were published in abundance during the Victorian period. It serves as a tool to preserve history as it was. This is a RARE! book as revealed from a major internet book site. It is only ONE OF TWO AVAILABLE at the time of this listing…GET IT WHILE YOU CAN!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR….Alexander Winchell was for many years state geologist of Michigan and professor of geology and paleontology at the University of Michigan. He defined and first named Mississippian (Lower Carboniferous) strata along the upper part of the Mississippi River. Mt. Winchell in California was named for him. As a lecturer and writer Winchell did a great deal to reconcile the conflicts between science (particularly evolution) and religion. Like Rev. Henry Ward Beecher he embraced evolution as God's way of working out his purposes in the world.
