Synopsis:
This book (based on research commissioned by the Survey of Race Relations in Britain) presents a reasoned and objective analysis of a multi-racial community in the 'twighlight zone' of a large industrial city. In Birmingham the housing shortage forces those who are not successful in obtaining other types of housing into lodging-houses in the twilight zone. This produces a mixed population of Irish, Pakistani, and West Indian immigrants, together with the remnants of the original local community and English down-and-outs and deviants. The book analyses the various groupings which are found and the tensions which develop between them. It discusses the likely effects on this situation of alternative housing and planning policies.
