R Taylor - An Introduction There’s no question that fervent attention to detail yields a superior guitar. One strum is all it takes to reveal it. Even one look promises that you’re in for something good. Welcome to R. Taylor Guitars.
The R. Taylor studio is housed in a separate building on the campus of Taylor Guitars. Here, five craftsmen work to build a handful of guitars each week. Each luthier has a minimum of ten years experience at Taylor, and each possesses the skill and the will to bring a guitar to life in a special way that cannot normally be done. Starting with the finest woods available in the world, we thoughtfully lay out the parts, weigh and measure, and design a plan, drawing upon our depths of experience. What top geometry or bracing alteration will work on this striped ebony back and sides? How do we work with cocobolo to fashion a fingerstyle instrument for one customer and a strummer for another? This is what we do with each of the three hundred or so guitars we will make in a year. The extra attention to detail means a lot more labor hours spent on each guitar. But we believe it’s worth it. We’re confident you will, too.
— Robert Taylor
The R Taylor Style 1 Acoustic Guitar This premium acoustic guitar features the very best in tonewoods with a Sinker Redwood Top which has a rich red/brown hue with hints of purple/brown striping along the top. The top resonates nicely and is very responsive indeed with subtle playing and harder playing yielding different nuances out of the guitar's rich pallet of tones.
Sinker Redwood is a reclaimed wood which has spent the last 75 years or so at the bottom of a North American river. The minerals in the silt and water penetrate the wood and a kind of petrification takes place which gives the wood a wide range of hues and shades of blue/purple/brown. No two pieces of Sinker Redwood look the same and make each guitar a unique piece. Sinker Redwood is a hard wood and when thoroughly dried and season creates perfect soundboards for instruments and are highly sought after for their sonic properties. Quantities of these guitars are very limited.
In addition to the Sinker Redwood top, the back and sides of this instrument are Indian Rosewood with a gorgeous tight and straight brown grain highlighted with orange streaks. Hand picked and beautiful in every way, the Rosewood is a perfect partner to the Sinker Redwood top.
The Style 1 body measures 16-1/4 inches wide at the lower bout and 4-7/16 inches deep at the lower bout. It's closest comparison size wise would be a Taylor GS, or x16 model. The sounds full and rounded perfect for strumming and also defined enough for fingerstylists to produce an excellent guitar with wide appeal. As mentioned previously, this particular guitar responds incredibly well to subtle adjustments in picking/strumming styles which allows you accent your music a very natural way.
This guitar features a standard RT neck profile so any Taylor player will be really at home with this guitar. The neck finish is satin and does not stick in your hand when playing.
The nut width is RT Standard 1.75" which is versatile for a range of playing styles and again will be very familiar to Taylor guitar players. A nice feature of this guitar is that it comes in a shorter scale length which makes the strings feel relatively light and easy to play. Fingerpicking styles are particularly rewarding along with strumming being very smooth and comfortable. Check out the video for a demo.
The binding on the guitar is Cocobolo, the red/brown hues look divine against the redwood top and rosewood. There are small dot inlays along the top side of the neck which are inset abalone...the finest detail has been poured over.
This particular guitar also features an Indian Rosewood backstrap (Back of headstock) which adds a really nice aesthetic to the guitar.
The internal bracing is made using Adirondack Spruce, the same as the top, and is a premium Spruce Wood. The guitar is made to be the best, and there has been no skimping on these details. Adirondack has a higher tensile strength than normal Sitka and this gives the guitar extra power and punch, especially combined with the Modified X bracing pattern.
The subtle and understated beauty of this guitar oozes quality. With excellent tone woods and R Taylor's superior build creating a truly magnificent instrument for a lifetime of enjoyment.
Here are some more details about this R Taylor Guitar.
Core Features (All R Taylor Guitars)
Solid Lining (Non Kerfed) Here’s a perfect example of a detail that adds several layers of complexity to the building process. But it is worth every extra bit of labor we put into it. Every R. Taylor guitar incorporates a solid lining to join the top and back of the guitar to the sides—a feature we feel puts our guitars into a whole different category. Solid lining has a huge impact on the guitar, creating a body with tremendous torsional strength. That allows us to build a lighter guitar, yet one that’s stronger and livelier. Thinner than traditional kerfed lining, the guitar top has more freedom to vibrate. The result is increased projection, superior overall acoustic response, and a "played-in" tone. We use solid Tropical mahogany lining to join the top and sides. For the lining that joins the back to sides, we match solid strips of the same wood you choose for the back and sides of your R. Taylor guitar. - Picture Here http://www.rtaylorguitars.com/Woods-Details-01.aspx
Hand Shaped Bracing Whether you choose our Modified X or Asymmetrical X Bracing pattern—in Sitka or Adirondack spruce (optional upgrade)—be assured that Keith Greenwood, Erik Larson and Tim Luranc carefully hand-select and hand-shape the braces to suit your individual guitar. It is with this type of fine-tuning, which is the product of a combined generation of guitar building, that we make your R. Taylor guitar unique. - Picture Here http://www.rtaylorguitars.com/Woods-Details-02.aspx
Inlaid Plate Bracing Many guitar builders tend to overlook this important aspect, but we think it’s a critical detail. On the underside of the upper bout of the guitar, flanking the neck pocket, we use a cross-grain spruce plate brace that is inlaid into the underside of the top. By taking the time to inlay the plate brace, this traditionally "restricted" area now becomes an active, integral part of the guitar’s top. The result is a difference you can truly hear. - Picture Here http://www.rtaylorguitars.com/Woods-Details-03.aspx
Top Relief Rout An epic battle of physics rages on between strength and flexibility, two opposing forces that are required of all guitar tops. The balance between the two means everything, and our solution is a breakthrough that finds the sweet spot for both. By routing a small, softly concave channel along a portion of the inside perimeter of the guitar’s top, the top gains additional freedom to move—and release its tone. It also means a very quick response, even at whisper-quiet playing levels. It’s a similar technique to "feathering" (reducing the thickness of the top toward the edges), which has the advantage of leaving the mass of an even-thickness top intact, promoting more power. The top relief rout is a patented process used by both R. Taylor and Taylor Guitars. - Picture Here http://www.rtaylorguitars.com/Woods-Details-04.aspx
NT Neck The NT neck is simply the most efficient, practical, structurally sound, and sonically transparent way to attach the neck to the body. This process allows us to precisely control both the angle of the neck and the relative distance between the guitar’s top and the fingerboard face. What does this mean to the player? A setup with unparallel precision and "goodbye" to the days of sanding or shimming the saddle. R. Taylor necks feature two-piece construction: the neck itself, and a glued-on, beautifully matched heel block. - Picture Here http://www.rtaylorguitars.com/Woods-Details-05.aspx
Body Binding and Purfling All of our binding and purfling is hand-mitered. Erik Larson has bound literally thousands of guitars, and his body-binding techniques are truly a thing of beauty. Keith Greenwood binds the fingerboards and pegheads, and he is renowned for his craftsmanship and attention to detail. Whether the guitar has our subtle and elegant ebony binding, or any combination of our exotic binding/purfling options, the end result is a harmonious union of function and art.
Bridge Similar in appearance to a Taylor bridge, there are subtle differences that define a level of evolution rarely seen in guitar construction. Our bone saddle, configured in a "wave" profile, may just be the most accurately intonated acoustic guitar saddle ever designed. It allows full compensation while permitting each string–even the "B" string–to lay on a fully-rounded approach surface. Our design ensures that the strings pass over the saddle at precisely the correct angle for optimum performance.
Woods Used On This Model
Sinker Redwood Top Logs that sank during transportation down river to the mills. Recently reclaimed, this wood has a beauty all its' own. The mineral deposits that have leached into the wood for the last 100 years or so from the river bottom environment have caused the wood to develop a rainbow of hues. Some of the colors that may be found in sinker wood are; pink, blue, green, purple, black and yellow. These colors sometimes run in streaks, pink and purple being the most common. Due to the salt content in the water that these logs spent the last 75 to 100 years in, a sort of petrifaction has occurre and produce a very hard and resonant wood - perfect for soundboards and available in limited quantities.
Indian Rosewood Even we were surprised by some of the colors and figure of our highest quality R.Taylor Indian rosewood. With a bold bass response, incredible projection and sustain, it carries a warmth throughout the entire range of overtones. Brazilian rosewood tends to command more attention (and price), but Indian rosewood ranks high among our favorite tonewoods.
Cocobolo Binding With dramatic, eye-popping grain patterns, cocobolo is one of our favorite tonewoods. Big and bold sounding, it imparts a beautiful musicality to every note and is a perfect choice for those looking for an excellent all-around guitar. A very dense species, we typically build our cocobolo guitars with slightly thinner backs and sides.
