If you are in the market for a Quad II amplifier which is totally original, has no modifications,no cannibalised parts from other amplifiers and has not been “tarted up” to look like something it is not,the Quad II Amplifier which is the subject of this auction,is definitely the one for you.
This amplifier is totally genuine and original. It has the very desirable attribute of all original components, including of course Mullard and GEC/Marconi valves. It is in excellent working order. This Quad amplifier has been in my possession for some time and has been exceedingly and consistently well looked after. It has the additional merit of having been fully serviced by Quad in 1988.
The amplifier retains the original British made valves,as matched and fitted by Quad when the amplifier left the factory. The output valves are a genuine pair of KT66 valves, made in England by GEC/Marconi.The driver stages in the amplifier use a total of 2 Mullard made EF86 valves. The rectifying valve is an original early bottle shaped Mullard GZ32 type .The chassis of the amplifier retains the original maker’s plate.
The paint finish, which is 100% genuine original is patinated by the passing of many decades. It is nicely mottled in places and as may be seen, there are some scuff marks. It is quite clearly the paint which was put on the amplifier all those years ago by Quad.No doubt some people would prefer Chinese valves and a respray, and of course the option exists to go down that path if you are so minded.
As may be seen from the photographs, the sub-chassis components are all original and there are absolutely no modifications.I should perhaps point out that the amplifier bottom cover has been temporarily removed for the purpose of taking photographs and this will be refitted prior to shipping the amplifier. The mains transformer, output transformer, chassis sockets, fuse carrier, voltage adjuster etc.,etc.,are all original Quad items. The amplifier has its original Quad maker’s plate which is in fine condition, without any chips or scratches.
As a precaution, before offering this amplifierfor sale,I have had it thoroughly checked over.It was no surprise to learn that no faults could be found and that it was confirmed to be in full working order. The audio from amplifier can best be described as warm and bright. There is no trace of any hum.The warmth of tone is seemingly a “trade mark”of vintage KT66 valves with their relatively long electron transmission times and is quite characteristic. It is Quad valve sound at its very best.
The starting bid for this especially fine, all original, Quad II Amplifier is a very realistic and sensible £340and there is an attractive option to buy it now for £360.Lest there be any misunderstanding, this Quad II amplifier is just about as good as it gets. It should not be confused with skilfully refurbished examples, with cannibalised valves, transformers etc., designed to be passed off as untouched originals. This is categorically, the genuine article.
