These ESL63s were refurbished by Quad in December 2002 at a cost of £720 (Photo 7). Three panels were replaced and both front and rear aluminium grilles were replaced by steel grilles from the ESL988, enhancing structural rigidity and audio dispersion, whilst also reducing speaker resonances and back reflections. An intermittent fault in #026012 resulted in Quad replacing two more panels under warranty in November 2003 (Photo 8). In July 2007, #026011 was found to be faulty and was returned to Quad for replacement of two more panels at a cost of £360 (Photo 9). These repairs are covered by a Quad warranty until 23rd August 2008. All these panels have been replaced within the last five years and are therefore unlikely to cause the new owner problems for many years to come.
I've owned these loudspeakers for 12 years, and am selling them after upgrading to ESL989s. The ESL63s are a matched pair finished in a tasteful Rosewood/Black trim. Their late serial numbers indicate that they incorporate the latest ESL63 mods for EHT and overload protection. They have seen only light use (mainly classical music) in a non-smoking domestic environment, driven by a Quad 405-2 amplifier. There are no crackles, pops, fizzes or sparks and the overload protection circuits on each speaker trigger at similar volume levels. Cosmetically, they are in excellent condition (see photos). The highspots seen in some photos are due to camera flash. The loudspeakers will be supplied in their original Quad cartons with two IEC mains cables and an ESL63 instruction manual.
The ESL63 is widely acknowledged as one of the finest sounding loudspeakers ever made, hence it's use as a monitor in professional recording studios and other critical applications. Many audiophiles are of the opinion that the clarity, transparency, detail and imaging of the ESL63 has not been bettered by the ESL988 or the newer ESL2805, though these later models may have other merits. Those who go down the electrostatic route rarely return to moving coil loudspeakers, except for their cars, kitchens and bathrooms!
When packed, each loudspeaker box measures approximately 101x80x34cm and weighs 26Kgm. Overseas bidders should be aware that carriage could be prohibitively expensive. The winning bidder is strongly advised to take out adequate carriage insurance to protect against loss or damage in transit. Payment by Electronic Bank Transfer, Banker's Draft or Personal Cheque is preferred as PayPal fees are very high. Bid with confidence - I assure you that I will continue to do all I can to maintain my 100% feedback record!
Note: I am also selling a pair of Quad approved "Stand & Deliver" pedestal stands for these speakers via separate eBay auction.
