Wedgewood CREAM COLOURED Dish
QUEEN'S WARE
Wedgwood is one of the most recognized brand names of china in the world. It represents the highest level of accomplishment in the English fine china industry and has done so for nearly 250 years. Josiah Wedgwood started the company in 1759 when he was only 29 years old. Prior to opening his own pottery, he had been experimenting with various ceramic bodies and glazes for years. Throughout Wedgwood's life he made numerous innovations in ceramics and production methods that continue to be used by the company today.
Josiah Wedgwood had his first big success when he received a commission by Queen Charlotte to produce an extensive set of his creamware, a cream coloured earthenware with a lustrous glaze. It is said that Wedgwood produced the ware for the Queen at a very small profit, but the appointment won him a great deal of recognition. Because of the association with the Queen, Wedgwood's creamware soon came to be known as Queen's ware. Queen's ware became extremely popular. This success allowed Wedgwood to expand his pottery experimentation and move his operation to a larger factory in Etruria.
