(Previously know as Leucadendron grandiflorum)
Leucadendrons are exclusively found in the flora-rich Cape region of South Africa and are dioecious (they have the sexes on separate plants) They have distinctive, colourful, terminal leaves (bracts) that surround the true flowers.
'Leucadendron tinctum' is a sturdy bush of approx 1 metre in height. It will tolerate most well-drained soils and is a reasonably wind tolerant and frost hardy species.
Large seed cones of deep bronze-red are produced by the female and yellow flowers by the the male from mid-winter to early spring. Both are surrounded by broad bracts of golden yellow, which age to ornamental shadings of red.
An attractive addition to any garden which will bring a continually changing colour pattern and warmth throughout the winter months.
Height : 1 metre approx
Soil : Will tolerate most soils but prefers well-drained soils
Position : Prefers full sun/partial shade.
Hardiness : Frost hardy, has proven to survive temperatures of up to -7 degrees with us on the nursery.
If you live in a very cold area consider growing it in a large tub, and keeping it in a greenhouse/conservatory over the winter months.
Plants under glass must have plenty of ventilation throughout the year.
Prune well to encourage upward growth. Prune at a young age to encourage a good branching structure and dense growth.
Uses : Makes an ideal cut flower, pots and containers, beds and borders, specimen plant.
The plant you will receive is a well established, healthy, fresh, single stemmed 9cm plant of approximately 8 - 10 inches in height. It will be packaged within its pot to a very high standard to ensure its safe arrival to yourself.
