Pierre Le Boeuff Antique Townscape Watercolour Painting

Description: An excellent original antique townscape watercolour on artist's paper, signed "Pierre le Boeuff" and dating circa 1900. Framed - approx 22 X 18 inches (55.88 X 45.72cm). This is an excellent French Impressionist watercolour dating from the Victorian period. The townscape depicts a wonderful colourful 19th Century French market scene. Figures, in colourful attire, gather on the cobbled street below where market sellers display their wares. A horse and cart travel down the street, flanked by wonderful crooked old multi-storied timber jetted buildings. Towering over the town are two large imposing steeples of a church or cathedral, painted in blue grey hues as they rise high into the blue clouded sky above. A classic 'Grand Tour' piece from this popular late 19th Century French artist. The work is signed "Pierre le Boeuff" lower left.

Date: The watercolour probably dates to around 1900.

Artist Biography: Pierre le Boeuff (French late 19th / early 20th Century) - Active 1899 - 1920. Prolific artist of European street scenes in classic "Grand Tour" late 19th Century style.

Framing: Later plain moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt. The watercolour is mounted on board and has a off-white mount.

Condition: The painting is in good condition, retaining splendid colour for its age. There is a little discolouring to the sky area, this not uncommon for watercolours of this age. The painting has been recently re-framed and mounted, both in excellent condition.
