As he had done so often before the war, in the summer of 1946 Picasso went to the Mediterranean coast. There a development occurred which was to be very important for Picassos work: he met the curator of the museum at Antibes who offered him his museum in exchange for one of his works. Picasso was so enchanted by the little museum in the old Grimaldi castle high above the old port, that he not only expressed himself ready to donate a work to the museum, but he also used one of the rooms as a workshop to create a number of paintings on large plaques of a fibrous material; these works have stayed in the museum. Thus the museum of Antibes has become a Picasso museum, where a group of paintings document the artists creative joy in the years just after the Second World War.
Picassos stay at Antibes was one of his happiest periods. The paintings dating from that time continue to show the creation of a personal mythology, which had been begun in the 1930s. But whereas in the prewar paintings the mythology is in a gloomy minor key and the figures evoke anxiety, injustice, and demonic aggressiveness, the paintings of the Antibes period express joy in living—the title of the main work produced in this period. Here mythology is wholly in a major key.
After the First World War, too, there were some radiantly cheerful paintings among Picassos works; now, after the Second World War, joy at freedom regained seems to have inspired Picasso to a far greater extent. The environment too contributed to this: the Mediterranean sun, the ambiance of a gay culture thousands of years old, perhaps even memories of happy childhood days on a similar beach.
La Joie de vivre, the painting shown here, magnificently combines personal and classical elements of mythology. The composition which, here too, seems defined by a pedimental triangle, brings to mind Guernica, but how enormous the difference in emotional content! At the center of the painting a female figure is leaping into the air, dancing uninhibitedly. At the left a centaur trots along, and at the right another centaur, seated, is playing the flute. Not far away two young goats are frolicking. The colors are luminous and applied in large bright areas. Both color and form produce the impression of winged, carefree relaxation. Moreover the panel is big enough to give Picassos inventiveness and delight in color free rein. Thus came into being a world of mythological joy, at the center of which stands the cult of woman. Françoise Gilot, Picassos new companion, inspired this natural, happy joy in living, which enchants us time and again in all the cheerful paintings of the Antibes period.
Pablo Ruiz Picasso (October 25, 1881 – April 8, 1973) was a Spanish painter and sculptor. His full name was Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Clito Ruiz y Picasso. One of the most recognized figures in 20th century art, he is best known as the co-founder, along with Georges Braque, of cubism. (Data source: Wikipedia)
Vintage 1996 book print on poster type paper. Excellent condition. This lavish book print is very beautiful with its wide margins, making this very suitable for framing. A great conversation piece from the collection of vintage plates printed and published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., NY in 1996. Harry N. Abrams, Inc. presented in this collection, reprints of backlist favorites designed to sell at popular prices. Published under the Abradale imprint, these prints were produced to the same high standards of quality for which Abrams is celebrated.
Excellent condition. Clean, no stains, no rips, no tears. The print is crisp and sharp. The detail of this print is just beautiful. This high-quality print is clean, not discolored or faded, and is in excellent condition. It is printed on nice heavy stock, making it very suitable for framing. The back side of the print has unrelated text which does not show through to the front because of the poster quality paper it was printed on. This artistic print is a nice alternative to an original copy of the masterpiece, if you could find one, which you would expect to pay in the hundreds, or perhaps even thousands, depending upon the condition. This print is ready for mounting and framing and will look wonderful in practically any frame, antique, or otherwise.

About my prints... The prints I sell are mostly from vintage and antique portfolios and books, making them excellent alternatives to expensive art prints, which you can expect to pay much more for in today's market. The publishers knew their work would be closely examined and under intensive scrutiny by art critics. When compared to expensive posters, the colors in these prints are often quite noticeably more vivid and sharp. In some cases these prints are the only possible way to acquire copies of the rare paintings, engravings, and photographic images you'll find in my eBay store. Add a frame and you can enjoy this print and it's aesthetic appeal without spending a fortune!
My shipping procedures... A lot of care and expense is put into making sure your prints arrive undamaged. Prints are carefully bagged in plastic sleeves, gently rolled, and mailed in a sturdy cardboard mailing tube. Larger orders and Priority Mail orders are usually shipped flat between sturdy cardboard using creative methods to prevent the USPS from bending or damaging your prints. A large tube mailer may be used for larger prints depending upon what appears to be the safest way to ship. PLEASE BE SURE TO HANDLE YOUR PRINTS WITH CARE TO AVOID DAMAGING THEM WHEN REMOVING THEM FROM THE TUBE OR PACKAGE.
