Phenix 150mm(6 inch) Newtonian Reflector Telescope

Sky's the Limit are proud to offer for sale this short tube Newtonian Equatorial Reflector telescope.  It comes from from the Phenix Optics Co who are part of the Jiangxi Optical Instruments Group. This group is one of the largest and leading State-Owned Enterprises in the optical line in Mainland China, with more than 4500 staff, 700 engineers and technicians.

This is an exceptional astronomical reflector telescope that comes with everything you will need to enjoy the night skies and is finished in black.

"..we were pleasantly surprised when the deep-sky views of the nebulae M27 and M57 turned out to be quite respectable"

" .. the double star Albireo was clear. "

"If you are on a limited budget then the Phenix ... is incredibly cheap and very light - ideal for getting started in astronomy without breaking the bank"

"It exhibited good colours at low powers .."
Sky at Night Magazine January 2007

It is a 150mm (6" approx) reflector telescope with a focal length of 750mm. The set has an aluminium tripod with an equatorial mount. The telescope is counterbalanced and has slow motion hand controls on right ascension and declination axes. Focusing utilises rack and pinion gears for a smooth and accurate operation.

You are bound to want to know how good is it?  You will get absolutely brilliant, pin sharp images from this excellent telescope.  With the 25mm eyepiece you can see the rings of Saturn quite clearly (if they are not edge on to the Earth).  With the 6.5mm eyepiece you can see the gap between them and the planet!  The 10mm eyepiece is a great addition to the set.

A 2x Barlow lens is included which effectively doubles the magnification of any of the eyepieces in the set.

An image erecting eyepiece is also included so that you can use the telescope to see things on land with the image being the correct way up (astronomical telescopes show inverted images as a default).

We include a Moon filter to cut down the glare from the Moon but we dispose of the Sun filter as we would never recommend looking directly at the sun and feel that these could be potentially dangerous if there is the slightest defect in them.

Talk to us nicely and we will tell you what the removable plug in the dust cap is for as well as that dangly bit of chrome metal that sits on the side of the mount (see last photo)!

We do not include a star map as we think that they are rather pointless.  Compare it to a piece of sandpaper representing a map of the Sahara and you will get the drift.  Much better to buy one of the monthly astronomy magazines which will explain quite simply what can be seen with your telescope at any month (Sky at Night and Astronomy Now are good ones to get from W H Smith).  Also, if you want a book, try and get hold of "Turn Left at Orion" by Guy Consolmagno for about £15.00 at Amazon.  This is a really great book to accompany your telescope as it shows you what to look for, when to look for it and what it might look like in your telescope.

The photos show that the main tube and the focuser tube are finished in matt black which is important in reducing stray reflections in the light path.  You only want the light from the mirrors to reach the eyepiece without any extra to spoil the view.

The mount is a sturdy EQ3 (although the booklet calls it an EQ7 - perhaps a 3 and a 7 look similar in China).  It has slow motion controls on the RA (right ascension) and the Dec (declination) axes.  The mount can be motorised to counteract the movement of the Earth while you are observing.

The use of the scope is expandable so in the future you can add additional eyepieces, filters, camera adapters, red dot finders etc.  You will not grow out of the scope in five minutes.

In fact, we are so confident about the telescope that we offer a full refund, including postage, if you are not totally satisfied - see if anyone else will be that confident!  As a first step into astronomy this scope is fantastic.  If you can find better value and service than this at this price our advice is to buy it.

In detail the set comprises:
  • D150 reflector telescope
  • 6 X 30 viewfinder scope
  • 3 interchangeable Plossl lenses - 25mm, 10mm & 6.5mm
  • 2x Barlow lens
  • 1.5 image erecting eyepiece
  • Full sized aluminium tripod
  • EQ-3 equatorial mount (allows accurate finding and tracking of the stars)
  • Flexible cables (2)
  • Balance weight
  • Accessory tray

Magnification: 25mm eyepiece = 30x, 10mm = 75x and 6.5mm eyepiece = 115x

We have a full range of additional eyepieces to suit this telescope. Ebay policy prohibits us putting a  link to our website but it is quite like our email address which are permitted to include.  If you are not sure, please email us at sales@skysthelimit.org.uk
