| | Album notes | Personnel: Peter Tosh (vocals, arranger, acoustic & electric guitars, autoharp, Clavinet); Mick Jagger (vocals); Mikey "Mao" Chung (guitar, Fender Rhodes piano, Moog synthesizer); Robbie Shakspeare (guitar, bass); Keith Richards, Donald Kinsey (guitar); Luther Francois (soprano saxophone); Robert Lyn (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet, organ, keyboards); Keith Sterling (keyboards); Sly Dunbar (drums, percussion); Larry McDonald, Sticky (percussion).Recorded at Dynamic Sound Studios, Kingston, Jamaica in 1978. Includes liner notes by Roger Steffens. All tracks have been digitally remastered. From his days as one of the original Wailers in the '60s until his violent death at the hands of thieves in 1987, Peter Tosh was one of Jamaican music's most outspoken and controversial artists. Though his former partner Bob Marley never shied away from political or social statements himself, Tosh eschewed Marley's gift for metaphor and parable in favor of such explicitly political slogans as the legendary "Legalize It." BUSH DOCTOR, widely considered one of Tosh's best solo albums, features the similarly plain-spoken title track, which became one of his signature songs, the seething "Dem Ha Fe Get A Beatin'," and the devotionally Rasta "Soon Come" and "Creation." Other tracks, like "Stand Firm" and "I'm The Toughest," are more general statements of defiance and self-determination but are no less powerful. The music is equally strong and relentless. BUSH DOCTOR is a roots-reggae masterpiece.
