A Paul Storr Solid Sterling Silver Chamberstick

Made by Paul Storr, London 1819.

A VERY RARE shaped circular Chamberstick. With cast leaf and gadrooned border, shell and moulded handle, the lobed centre engraved with a crest and with urn-shaped sconce with reeded and gadrooned edge. With his 9th registered mark.

This chamberstick was made at an interesting time in Paul Storr's life.  With ten children and a wife, he left his job at Rundell and Bridge and moved into his own premises at 18 Harrison Street off Greys Inn Lane (later Road) which was to become his only address. In the book on Storr's life Penzer  writes, "Yet in spite all of this, his conscience would not permit him to stay in a job-however lucrative and permanent it might be -in which he felt the oppertunity for personal creation was at an end and the hand of the individual craftsman lost in the souless glitter of the filed and polished surfaces" etc .... So this stick was made at a time when Storr, when working for himself at last, feels a breath of artistic freedom for the first time since his early early work.  A truly lovely balance of ornate and plain silver surface, along with a very heavy weight of silver, helps make this chambertick an aesthetic masterpiece.  In superb museum condiiton.
