Description: A fine portrait oil on artist's canvas, signed Patricia Rhodes and dating circa 1960s. Framed - approx 19 X 15 inches (48.26 X 38.1cm).
This is a fine English Expressionist oil dating from the mid c20th period. The portrait depicts a wonderful contemporary modernist study. In typical Rhodes style, the artist is experimenting with different methods, the portrait set on a dark ground, the subject depicted in pastel peach colouring. The portrait, in profile, shows the woman wearing a high collared coat, her facial expression having a smile, with hair swept under a pink coloured hat. A good modernist study, cleverly executed using light and shade. An intersting piece from this enthusiastic artist. The work is signed Patricia Rhodes verso. |
Date: The oil probably dates to around 1960s. |

Patricia Rhodes
Patricia, known as 'Trish,' from Blundellsands, enjoyed a privileged childhood as the daughter of wealthy philanthropist William Rhodes who founded Merseyside ship loaders W.H.R. Rhodes and Son. Her oil paintings were exhibited in galleries throughout Europe such as the Paris Salon and won her many awards and entry in the World Who's Who of Women. She was educated at Calder College and attended finishing school in Montreaux, Switzerland, before going on to study art at the University of Liverpool. Her sister Pamela Leah, 83, said: "Patricia loved painting. Even as a child she drew the most beautiful horses. "She progressed to floral studies, still life and landscapes, some of North Wales and of course, the Mersey and I think she even had an abstract period in the 60's." Apart from being an artist Patricia was involved in community and charity work and was a well-known golfer, winning the Northern Women's Open Foursomes in 1960. She retained an interest in art until her death, enrolling at a life-drawing workshop at the age of 87. Pamela said: "Patricia may have seemed a little shy but she had a real sense of humour. She must have done to start painting nudes at that age." Patricia Rhodes entered a painting to the Royal Academy in 2001. She started painting in retirement and her exhibition agents were R Jackson of Liverpool. Her work varied from expressionist inspired landscapes to energetic, richly coloured still life paintings. | |
Framing: Contemporary plain moulded Pine. Finish: Limed. The oil is mounted on a stretcher. |
