This is a wonderful Pate Sur Pate chocolate colored plaque from the late 1800s with a Cherub chasing a butterfly and a cat after some mice in white. One mouse is hiding below a mushroom and another is at the base of the flower plant. The plaque is 9 inches in diameter. The plaque is somewhat lopsided as it must have slumped during the firing process in the kiln, but it displays nicely on an easel. It would also look great in a shadow box type frame!
Pate sur Pate is French which literally means ‘paste on paste’ and is the method of porcelain decoration in which a relief design is created on an unfired, unglazed body by applying successive layers of white slip (liquid clay) with a brush. There are no manufacture marks on the back. It really takes a skillful artist to achieve a wonderful scene such as this plaque, so don't miss out!
