This is an excellent auto bounce swivel flashgun, dedicated for most popular manual focus SLR cameras (see below). It's ideal for photographers with more than one type, or those looking to upgrade. Plus, it has a standard (non-dedicated) setting, hot shoe and synchro cable and a lowish trigger voltage of under 10v, so it's ideal for many digital cameras too - see the Compatibility section below for more details.

The bounce and swivel flash head tilts up to 90 degrees and swivels over 330 degrees for bounce flash in vertical or horizontal positions. Bounce flash gives much softer, more natural lighting than direct flash. A secondary flash tube is built in, and this fills in the shadows when bounce flash is used. This can be switched on or off as desired. The flash covers lenses down to 35mm (on film cameras), and a 28mm wide angle diffuser is also supplied, along with three colour filters.

Powerful guide number of 30m (100ft) with ISO 100 film. This gives a theoretical maximum range of up to 21m (70 feet) with ISO 100 film and 50mm f/1.4 lens, or double this ISO 400. As with all flashguns, actual range will depend on the conditions. Two auto exposure modes are available, giving ranges from 1.3 to 11m (4.5 to 35 feet) at f/2.8, or 0.9 to 5.3m (3 to 17 feet) at f/5.6 with ISO 100 film. Full manual option provided. Thyristor circuitry used in auto modes for faster recycling and more flashes per set of batteries.

Dedicated auto operation with suitable film and Pentax digital cameras (see below), setting the shutter speed automatically and displaying flash ready in the viewfinder. Comprehensive control panel on the rear of the flash provides distances from 0.6 to 15m (2 to 50 feet), apertures from f/2 to f/32 and film speeds from ISO 25 to 800. Ready light, plus auto check light confirms correct exposure after the shot has been taken.

This independent Starblitz 3300DTS flashgun is nicely made (in Japan), yet weighs only around 340g (without batteries). Locking shoe fitting for secure mounting. Takes 4x standard AA batteries, and disposable Alkaline types (supplied) are recommended.

Mint- (almost as new)
The flash is in excellent condition and fully working order. All controls work positively, and the flash has been checked on film and digital cameras. Cosmetically, it is in very nice condition with just the usual handling marks here and there in the plastic finish. The battery compartment is very clean, with no evidence of battery leakage or corrosion. The instructions and filters are in good condition.

Canon
Dedicated auto flash works on auto models including the Canon AE-1, AE-1 Program, AT-1, AV-1, AL-1 A-1, T50, T70, T80, T90 and F-1N. The shutter speed is set automatically when the flash is charged, and flash ready status is shown in the viewfinder on the AE-1, AE-1 Program, A-1, T50, T70, T80, T90 and F-1N AE. The aperture is set manually. Not suitable for TTL or program flash modes. NOT suitable for Canon EOS cameras or the EF-M.

Minolta
Dedicated auto flash works on auto models including the Minolta XG-1, XG-2, XG-7, XG-9, XG-A, XG-M, X-300 (X-370), X-300s (X-370N), X-7A, X-9 X-500 (X-570), X-700 and other XG and X models, the XD, XD-5, XD-7, XD-11 and the CLE rangefinder camera, plus the Centon DF-300 and some Seagull cameras, which are clones of the Minolta X models. The shutter speed is set automatically when the flash is charged, and flash ready status is shown in the viewfinder. Not suitable for TTL or program flash modes. NOT suitable for Minolta Dynax/Maxxum AF cameras, APS or digital cameras.

Nikon
Dedicated auto flash works on auto models including the Nikon EM, FG, FG-20, F-301 (N2000), FE, FE2, FM3A, FA and F-601M (N6000). The shutter speed is set automatically when the flash is charged, and flash ready status is shown in the viewfinder. Viewfinder indication of flash ready on the Nikon FM-2. Not suitable for TTL or program flash modes. Independent flash units like this one are NOT suitable for Nikon digital SLR cameras.

Olympus/Praktica
Dedicated auto flash works on auto models including the Olympus OM-2, OM-2N (these models require the appropriate Olympus flash shoe), OM-2 Spot Program (OM-2S), OM-4, OM-4ti (OM-4t), OM-10, OM-10 Quartz Date, OM-20 (OM-F), OM-30 (OM-G), OM40 (OM-PC), plus the Praktica BC 1, BC 3, BX20, BX20S and Jenaflex cameras. The shutter speed is set automatically when the flash is charged, and flash ready status is shown in the viewfinder. Viewfinder flash ready indication on the OM-1N and OM-3 models. Not suitable for TTL or program flash modes. NOT suitable for Olympus digital cameras, which use a completely different dedicated flash system.

Pentax

The shutter speed is set automatically when the flash is charged, and flash ready status is shown in the viewfinder. Please note that this flash is not compatible with TTL or program flash modes. On AF and digital cameras you need to set the aperture manually (A mode works well), and then the flash sets the correct exposure depending on the distance.

Other cameras
This flash has the once-standard hot shoe and flash lead, which fits cameras with a hot shoe connection or standard flash shoe with PC flash synchro socket. These connections have been fitted to cameras for generations, including many 35mm SLR and rangefinder cameras, medium format models and even modern digital cameras. The lead can plug into slave units or extension leads (not included) for multiple flash setups.

NOTE: We've tested this flash and it has a lowish trigger voltage of 9.8v, which should be suitable for most cameras. This is within the ISO 10330 standard of 24v, and only some cameras (particularly Canon EOS) specify lower voltages. If in doubt, check with your camera manufacturer for the safe voltage for your equipment.

It's ideal for digital cameras with a standard (non-dedicated) hot shoe. Suitable models include the Fujifilm S9000, S9100, S9500, S9600, S20 Pro, S7000, S602, S602 Pro and 6900Z, Panasonic DMC-FZ10, FZ20, FZ30 and DMC-LC5, Pentax EI-2000 (HP C912) and EI-3000, plus many, many others. It also works fine on digital SLR cameras and others with dedicated hot shoes, but in manual (non-dedicated) mode. You set the shutter speed and aperture manually on the camera, and auto exposure is controlled by the sensor on the flash.
