POOLE POTTERY 1950's RD PATTERN 998 SHAPE CHEESE DISH

This lovely 998 shape cheese dish is decorated in the pretty RD pattern.  I believe it was made in the early 1950's.  This shape was introduced in the 1930's and was in production for many years and the factory marks include the impressed Poole stamp in constant use from 1930.  The paintress mark on the base is that of Margaret West who worked at Poole from 1951 to 1954.  The lid was decorated by someone else but I can't identify the paintress mark.

  This range of cheese dishes were decorated in a variety of different designs, many of them with the same colourways on the base which only had rows of dots around the rim, so they were very much a "mix & match" range and I doubt much care was taken at the factory to put the right pattern references on the bases.  This cheese dish is marked as being of the RD pattern on the lid and PC pattern on the base but both designs used the same colour base so it is not at all surprising that these two found themselves together. The base is 4.75" (12cm) x 6" (15cm) and overall it is 3.5" (9cm) high.

This set has some minor glaze flaws so common at the time and there is a little bit of wear to the base where the lid has rubbed it over the years.  The bottom edge of the lid is stained but that could probably be remedied with some bleach.  Otherwise it is in excellent undamaged condition with no crazing and will make a fine addition to your collection or super gift
