When in bright sunlght your eyes` natural defence is to close to prevent harmful rays from the sun damaging your eyes(hence "squinting") . The darkened lenses of sunglasses "fool" the eyes into remaining fully open and therefore the lenses must filter out the harmful rays to prevent potentially serious damage. Poor quality sunglasses WILL fool the eyes into staying fully open but WON`T filter out the harmful rays. Beware of cheap unbranded sunglasses / copies / fakes / designer "style" / which may have labels making false claims about UV filter levels. Aren`t your eyes worth protecting ?
