Mr. Cushion has already provided a pocket-sized guide to English Ceramic Marks. In the same convenient format he now deals with the factories, potters and decorators of Germany and other countries of Central Europe, all of whose products, particularly during the nineteenth century, were so closely allied in both style and technique. The period covered is from the sixteenth century until the present. Owing to the constantly changing political boundaries and names over this length of time, it has been found most practical to illustrate the marks under alphabetical order of place-names throughout, rather than to attempt a national classification.
A historical note about the use and methods of marking pottery and porcelain is followed by a brief survey of the ceramic art found in the area covered.
The marks are illustrated by accurately drawn facsimiles and alongside each is a note giving the date of the mark, type of ware produced, and, if applicable, the artist or proprietor concerned.
To simplify the finding of any mark, by even the new collector, there is a full index containing names, places, monograms, initials, heraldic devices, etc., and where necessary double entries cater for different interpretations of the more complicated marks.
